Photraphers that have inspired me......

Zena Holloway

She was born in bahrain in 1973 and raised in London. She lived in Egypt, moved to the Grand Canyon. She is a PADI instrutor and comercial diver and self tauht underwater photographer. At the age of 18 she  began experimenting underwater photography. In 1996 she completed her first advertising shoot for Faberge. Her credits include dazed and confused, FT, GQ,Tatler, 125, .cent, The Sunday Times, Nike, George Jensen, Sony, Elle Style Awards, Herbal Essences and Kyle Manouge.

I found out about this photographer by searching on 'google.com.' I typed in things like 'underwater photography', 'underwater fashion photography' etc. I found this photographer and found a link to her own website. I think her work is amaising because i'ts so dramatic and it really inspired me to think about doing more underwater photography. I think her work is so origional and creative. Most of her work is for fashion materal or for advertising so she is quite well known for her underwater phography ideas.

This photo was taken by Zena Holloway and is from her editoral collection. It's a close up beuty/fashion shtot. I was attractedI really like it, especially the way her hair is so dramatic and how the photo is focused to the left so strongly. It looks like this photo has been taken in a tank becasue you can't see the surface of the water and it's quite dark in the backgorund. This is common in underwater very deep tanks. However there is some soucre of light because the photo is very crisp. It looks like the light is more focussed on her upper body and face. This photo looks like it is for a fashion advertisiment for something because its really stlyised and there is focuss on the braclets so maybe a jewellery advertisment. There is a strong contrast between the black gloves and the bracelts, which is good becasue it defines the bracelets more so will stand out to viewers.

This photo also looks like it has been taken for a jewellery advertisemnet. I think this becasue there is a lot of focus on the black necklace and it has a great contrast with the models pale skin. This allows for the necklace to stand out and draw the viewer in to focus on the necklace. I like this photo in particular becasue of the way the model is looking downwardswith her eyes it gives the effect that she is closing her eyes. The subtle make-up on her eyelids is a nice effect aswell. It is a very light shade of green which brings a bit of colour into the photo.

The first thing that you notice with this photo is the material of the dress that the model is weraing. It is very bright and eyecatching. I think that this could of been edited to make it appear more elumionous. The nmodels hair is also very interesting for me because it is a quite unusual stlye. To me this almost resembles a crown maybe an underwater mermaid? The lighting in this photo is very interesting becasue it is very strongly focused on the girls dress and most of her face is in shadow. This could be an indication that this is a photo to advertise or perhaps just highlight the clothing more than the model. However the photo is very visually asethentic and i think this is helped by the moddelling.

This photo is simular to the previous the photo in that the main focus is on the dress. The angles on this picture are very strong. Her leg creates a strong line and draws the eye across the photo. This creates a sense of movement in the photo. There is also a strong contrast between the model's dark hair and the brightness of the dress, i think this is really dramatic. There looks like there is a light source coming from the top left corner because it's really (dark shadows) on the right hand side.

This is a long shot of model taken by Zena Holloway. The most striking part of this image is

This photo was taken by Zena Holloway. It is a fashion edatorial photograph of a model, she's modelling the dress in the picture. This photo is mostly inspiring to me because of the material of the dress. This is what draw me to the photo It has a sense of movemnt to it which is what i was mostly attracted to.  It is the main focus of the photograph because of the way the photo has been framed. So because of the way the photo was taken close up to the dress it makes the audience focus on the material. The composisiton of the photo is quite basic as in her other photographs. It is a plain background which might represent the sea/deep water. The model is in the forground but particulalrly her dress is appears to be the closest thing to you and her body is slightly further away from you. This makes the material stand out a lot.

Zena Holloways pictures have inspired me with my own work. They are all very fashion influenced but they all have a gracefull feel to them. I really like her work and will be trying to re-create some of her ideas as best i can with my own work.

Award-winning photographer and director Ric Frazier is one of the most skilled, experienced and versatile photographers specializing in water in the world. He has redefined the art of underwater photography, shooting everything ranging from people, props and sets, to ocean life.

Ric’s photographic journey began with his passion for helping to conserve and save the waters of our planet. This led him to pursue his degree in Advertising and Undersea Photography at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California.

Keeping in mind his goal of creating photos that show innovations in light and movement, Ric reminds the viewer that water is not only comfort, but also that it is energy, strength and life.

This image was taken by Ric Frazer, an experienced and versatile underwater photographer. It is a photo of a model underwater, unlike the other photos I think it doesn’t look like a fashion shot as the clothes she’s wearing aren’t particularly striking. It could perhaps be for a hair modelling advertisement as to me this is the most striking part of this image. The most interesting part of this photo for me is the contrast between the models red hair and the dark top. The dark shadow to the right in the background is in contrast with the hair aswell and also creates a sense of mystery, which attracted me to this image. When I looked further at this image I noticed that the models head isn’t fully immersed in the water. This creates a reflected image above her head on the water’s surface, which is another interesting part of this photo. The framing of this photo is quite simple, he has captured the whole of the model’s body and it looks as if it has been taken a bit further away as you can see a lot of the background (water). This photographer obviously wanted to include the water in the background in the frame. The model’s head is closest to the camera, with her arms and legs pointing backwards which draws the eye to the head and hair of the model. This could be why I found her hair the most striking because the angles of the body drew me to it. The large shadow area to the right of the photo is balanced out by the models hand and leg pointing in the opposite way. It makes the photo feel more balanced. In terms of composition, the water is in the background of the photo and the legs are furthest away fro m the camera making them look like they are in the background too. The model’s body and arms are slightly nearer to the camera and appear to be in the mid-ground. Finally the model’s head is closest to the camera which focuses the eye and could be seen as the foreground of the photo. The model’s body is in focus but the water in the background is slightly out of focus and the water/reflection above her head is out of focus as well. This creates a narrow depth of field as only the model’s body is in focus. However there is some light in this photo. This image has strong contrast lighting because it has some very dark areas next to some very bright areas. (The black shadow and the bright blue water). There is also a strong contrast between the bright red colour of the hair and the dark, black shadow. The colours in the background create coldness; however the warm colour of the hair balances this feeling. You get a sense of warmth and coldness at the same time.  The quality of the photo is quite good because the outlines of the body are quite crisp due to the amount of light in the photo. It looks like the photographer has taken this photo slightly lower then the model but it’s been taken straight on, which could be trying to create a dramatic feel and appear more striking.

This photo is again of a female model underwater. This could be a fashion shot or for a make-up company as the make-up is exaggerated and the top is quite fashionable. The most striking part of this image are the colours. I was drawn to this photo because of the bright pink and the interesting angle of the model. I think this photographer like to capture the reflection underneath the water surface as he has done this in the other picture aswell. I think the colours look really interesting in the reflection. The photographer has only shot the top half of the model’s body, leaving out her legs and one of her eyes. Perhaps he cropped it like this because he wanted the water above to take equal space of the frame as the model? This might be implying he considers the reflection a significant part to the image. You are drawn to the model’s body as it’s the closest thing to the camera. Her eye is also quite striking because of the pink make-up which draws you to it. The reflection is quite dominant on the photo so you are drawn to this aswell as it takes up half of the image. The light blue water in is the background but you can’t see a lot of it as well as the dark shadow to the bottom left of the image. I think this photographer likes to create a balanced photo as even thought the body is distorted strongly to the right, there is a very dark shadow behind the model to the left, which draws the eye to the left aswell. It creates a more balanced photograph because the viewer will look across the whole photo. The head and the lower body are in the mid-ground and the shoulder and upper body are in the foreground. It’s quite unusual to have the body closer to the camera than the head but I think this creates interesting angles and is a more dramatic photo. This photo has a broad depth of field because the body is really clear and in focus. Again there is quite a lot of light in this photo which gives it more of a broad depth of field.  However the reflection is very blurred and so this might give a more narrow depth of field. The lighting has a strong contrast in this photo as the brightness of the water and the model is in contrast with the dark shadow to the left.  The majority of this photo is very light, which highlights the bright colours of the top and make-up. There is a mixture of cool and warm colours. For example it’s shot underwater so the water is blue and is a cold colour. However, the material of the top and the make-up is pink, which is a slightly warmer colour, again balancing the photo with both warm and cold colours which is why I think this photo works because it’s not too strong either way. The quality of this photo is very good because the outline of the model’s body is really sharp and in focus.  The lines between the shadow and the body are very crisp, which means it is of good quality.  The photographer probably took this shot slightly lower down than the model because she is looking down a bit. The angle of the models body slices the photo in half, diagonally. This makes you focus on the model more than the reflection above.  You can also tell that the camera has been angled up because you can see under the water surface. The model is side on which is interesting because she covers the photo from one side to the other and is shot in at a very strange angle. I think this gives this photo some edge and I like it because it’s not necessarily conventional.

These images by Ric Frazer have really inspired me with my underwater photography. Even though they are focussed a lot on fashion underwater photography which i think might be very difficult to do myself the body shapes that the models make are really interesting and diverse. I think that all of his photos are striking and have highcontrast, which is what i really like about photos.
